Reflections on our Traveling Tailor

This weekend was definitely an eye opening experience for us at Tien Son. The whole weekend was a lot of work for everyone involved (especially Cody, Lan, and Mikey who spent forever setting the displays up!) full of fifteen hour days, long hours without food, great spurts of customers, and periods of inactivity. Having written the previous sentence (which sounds a lot like I am complaining) I can say that I would not have traded this last weekend for the world.<br />

Cody and Lan are two of the most dedicated people I know. They spent three months planning the Traveling Tailor event alongside Mikey, who did all the promotional work and advertisements, and their work paid off not only in physical presentation (just look at all the pictures from my previous entry) but in the customer base that Tien Son was able to build. To be completely honest, we were hoping for a full house of customers and a few more sales then we had; but as with everything there is a learning curve when finding out what works and what doesn't. We now have a better idea about how to advertise in Evansville and surrounding areas. Furthermore, we have aspirations to take our Traveling Tailor to Nashville, TN, so if you are in that area be sure to look out for us!<br />

I was fortunate enough to be measured for my own suit, custom designed for me by Lan herself, and I can say that getting measured was fun. I was not so thrilled about measuring the stomach area, but having Lan explain to me about what would look best on me and what wouldn't was an exciting experience. Lan suggested that I go with a suit made of two different fabrics, a brownish tan base fabric with black (shiny!) accents along all the edges of the suit. I know that our customers each had their own unique experience with Lan's measuring tape like I did and many were surprised not only about her vast knowledge but also by how many options were available to them!<br />
<br />
We had many different customers walk into our event with different purposes. On Saturday we had a future bride and groom come in to take advantage of our wedding special, buy five groomsmen suits get the groom's free, to discuss different options for their wedding. They were so impressed the groom and his brother came back to get shirts made for everyday use. On Sunday an local Evansville lawyer stopped by because his wife sent him out to get new suits. He decided to go with a starter suit, and if he liked it, he would be back for more. We haven't had a dissatisfied customer yet, so we will be seeing him again once he receives his new suit. All of our customers were eligible for free give aways, and many walked away with one of our ties, Executive Sets, cuff links and tie clips, or other great prizes. <br />

I spent most of my time (besides school) at our fashion house making clothes for my Barbie or helping my parents. Even though life has become more convenient, there is a beauty of custom make clothes that stand out from other types of economically making clothes. Therefore, together with my partner- Cody Land, we want to bring this art back to life in the United State. </div>

What is your job? <br /><br />I am the expert tailor of Tien Son Custom Tailored Suits. I ensure that our customers get the right measurements, help them have the perfect design that best compliments their body type from hair color, skin tone, to body type. I also make sure that our customers have the best customer service and our product meets customers need from quality to fashion. </div>

<br />4) What is your favorite Tien Son product?  <br /><br />It’s so hard to point out one product which I love the most. But I think I pay the most attention to our fabric. Since there is not much variety in mens suits compares to womens suits, the uniqueness of the suit counts on quality, especially fabrics. Our tropical blend is one of my favorite fabrics. It makes customers feel like wearing linen suits without have to worry about all the wrinkles. Its successful in taking advantage of line fabric but correcting the down side of it. <br />  <br />5) Describe your personal suit style in three words. Why did you choose these particular words?  <br /><br />Traditional, wool and stylish. <br /><br />I found myself interested in traditional/ old European looks. I like a traditional wardrobes such as double breast vest with pencil skirt. My favorite fabric is wool on this type of style. It is a high class fabric and make women who wear them look powerful and luxurious. Fashion always comes back to the original styles and modified to be a little different. Thus, understand the old fashion is the best way to design the modern looks.  <br /><br /> 6) Why should people buy from Tien Son? <br />  <br />Tien Son clothes are handmade from our fabrics to the process of making clothing. There is not production line exit in Tien Son Company. Our strategy is one tailor works on one product. It requires the tailor takes full responsibility for his or her product. Our tailors are not take couple months on training. They take years of experience before qualified to be Tien Son’s tailors.  Tien Son hires well-trained tailors to make high quality products and satisfies our luxury customers. </div>

Tien Son Custom Tailored Suits Press Conference

Today, the University of Evansville hosted a news conference for Tien Son Custom Tailored Suits, a business run entirely by UE students (both American and international) and alumni. The company started last year as part of an entrepreneurship course in the Schroeder Family School of Business Administration, and has continued to thrive. </div>

At the news conference, they unveiled their new website and announced a "Traveling Tailor" August 25-26th at the Evansville Airport Hampton Inn. I’m an ambitious, young, businessman, with a passion for capturing life's moments. I’m always thinking about the next big thing. How we can improve and move forward. I like long walks on the beach and fancy dinners under a moon lit sky. I love video production and would love to direct movies someday. I have worked on many projects and Tien Son is by far my favorite, and kind of a passion project. <br />

2) Why did you choose to work at Tien Son? What drew you to this particular company:<br />

A friend of mine actually off-handily mentioned my name to Cody, and he contacted me about an interview. I didn’t really know a whole lot about it and wasn’t necessarily ready to take on another task. But sitting in that interview and learning about the company, what they did and what they believe in made me change my whole outlook in a matter of minutes. My head was flooded with ideas and that is always a good sign in my industry. I knew this was going to be something I would really enjoy. Not to mention, Cody’s suit looked super slick. <br />

3) How do you view your role in Tien Son? What is your job:<br />
<br />
I think social media is a vital role in any business. I’d like to think of myself as more of a creative consultant really. Social Media alone couldn’t cover what I do for Tien Son. I’m always considering what is best for the company and how we can improve the customer experience. I love interacting with people and this gives me a lot of venues to interact with the customers. <br />

4) What is your favorite Tien Son product:<br />
<br />
It’s so hard to pick which product is my favourite. Every time I look at new products I want to claim it as my favourite. Since I’m a University of Evansville Fan, I’d have to say that the UE Collection of Ties is probably my favorite. Go Aces!<br />

I think a better question is, why would you buy from anywhere else? We say it all the time, once you go custom tailored, you’ll never go back. It’s so true. I have had super nice suits in my time, nothing has been as nice as my Tien Son suits. I would wear Tien Son clothing all the time if I could. Sadly, we don’t make silk boxers.. Yet. </div>

I am a major geek about all things culture, archaeology, psychology, books, and animals. I am applying for the United States Foreign Service (think ambassadors and embassies) within the next year as well as taking the GRE, working three jobs and two internships. Basically, I love being busy. I also hate mornings and adore sweets. <br />

2) Why did you choose to work at Tien Son? What drew you to this particular company? <br />
<br />
Lan has been a good friend of mine since our first plane ride to college, so I wanted to help her expand her business. I believe that Tien Son has great potential as a company and I thought the inventory on the website looked a lot better compared to some other ones I had looked at in the past (my grandfather loves all things suits, so I am a veteran tie buyer). Cody and Lan are wonderful people who bring a lot of energy and ideas that I was interested in, so I wanted to be a part of their growth. <br />
<br />
3) How do you view your role in Tien Son? What is your job? <br />
<br />
I write blog entries. My job is to give the audience tips on suits, promote Tien Son, and hopefully entertain people along the way. My particular brand of humor hopefully doesn’t have readers scratching their heads too much. I was always the child who asked “why” to everything, so I would like to think that what I bring to Tien Son is a fresh perspective and ideas based on constantly asking questions to get everyone thinking as well. I also like to be the member of the group that pushes the Vietnamese cultural aspect of the company; I attempt to put it in everything I write and want all our customers and readers to be as proud of this heritage as I am.<br />

Tien Son is one of those companies that has extreme value in everything that we do, and that feeling is transmitted across to our customers. It is this sort of company that everyone should buy from in order to get great quality. The reasons why to buy from us are endless, but the only way to truly understand what Tien Son can offer is to buy a suit from us.<br />

I feel that my role is to help convey the image of Tien Son through my writing. My job is to generate original content on the Tien Son Fashion Blog and to edit any text on the website. <br />

I am a US Air Force veteran and have a bachelor’s degree in Finance. I am a very active person and enjoy adrenaline sports.<br />

2) Why did you decide to expand Tien Son Custom Tailored Suits? <br />
<br />
Attending the University of Evansville, I met Lan, an eighth generation tailor from Vietnam. Her family sent her to the United States to receive an American business education and then to help grow the business throughout Asia. However, after loads of coffee and weeks of market research we decided that larger opportunities exist in America. To our surprise, pure bespoke suits are very hard to find, especially online.<br />

Modern, slim and unique<br />

I prefer the modern look to suits (1 and 2 button) typically with a slim notch lapel and double vents in the back. I prefer a slim fit, especially in the trousers. Additionally, I love the minor customization options that make my suit truly unique such as monogramming and catchy lining. <br />

Buying A Suit In Italy: Siena

Jordan and I had our second suit excursion in Siena. This medieval town was built around a central plaza in the 1300 hundreds and in modern times the buildings have been converted into shops. These shops surrounding the Campo have been turned into high class clothing boutiques for both men and women. The shop Boggi Milano is one of six owned by the Carapelli family, who started their suit business in Milan.<br />

I have to be honest when I say that I had a hard time finding fault with this shop, which earned a 4 out of 5. Not only were we offered wine and cheese upon entering the shop, the owner himself waited on our every needs (we aren't special - it was siesta and everyone else was on break) from answering questions to helping with the fittings. His shop was elegant and stylish with all wooden furniture, lots of seating for guests, and wardrobes full of high quality suits. Paolo Carapelli took Jordan's measurements, making suggestions about styles and fabrics in perfect English.<br />

Jordan had seen this shop on trips to Siena before and had been impressed with the ties and pocket squares that the mannequins had. He had chosen a double breasted suit made of a fine black fabric with pinstripes, but Paolo had him try on a number of suits, including the middle sample from this photo:<br />

We appreciated Paolo's suggestions, but Jordan had his heart set on the pinstripe suit. Eventually the owner "allowed" him to try it on, but his demeanor changed from pleasant to standoffish. I can only guess that by not taking Paolo's suit advice his attitude turned cold. On the one hand, one suggestion that Jordan didn't ignore was he should "have a suit color that matches his hair color." I actually liked this advice, and thought it had a lot of merit because I like color symmetry. On the other, Paolo's advice was contrary to the suits that he wanted Jordan to try on and eventually buy. After much discussion between the two of us we figured out that the suit Jordan wanted was 200 euro. The suit Paolo was trying to sell us was 600. </div>

The moral of this story is that a company can seem very good on the outside (fancy furniture and excellent wine) but once customer service is called into question, that is where I draw the line. Boggi Milano had a fantastic suit that Jordan wanted, but Paolo's hot-then-cold attitude completely lost him the sale. </div>

It's rare to find a suit that lacks any sort of texture or pattern. While this fact makes it especially hard to take separate pieces of an outfit and put them together, this guide to common suit patterns and how to use them should help somewhat.<br />

Houndstooth comes in a variety of colors, from stark, modern black and white to warm, rugged brown. Unless your style is particularly edgy, it's typically a good idea to stick to a tiny version of the pattern (sometimes called "puppytooth") with a low contrast. Worn correctly, it can be incredibly hip. Gray or black houndstooth pairs well with a pink or red tie, while the brown variety goes well with green and mustard.</div>

<b>Pinstripes</b></div>

Pinstripes are the most common suit pattern. While they appear to be solid, thin stripes spanning the fabric, the stripes are actually composed of tiny dots lined up directly next to each other, hence the name. There are many variations on the pinstripe, but it typically comes in a single stripe in black and white, gray or navy. Pinstripe suits are easily paired with vertically striped shirts and diagonally striped ties. The secret to blending stripes is making sure they're all various widths so that they eye doesn't have to work too hard to tell between the different pieces.<br />

Again, make sure that not every piece has the same pattern size and level of contrast. </div>

Buying A Suit In Italy: Florence

Throughout my time in Italy I employed my boyfriend Jordan to help me investigate what buying a suit in Italy was really like. We randomly chose four cities and four stores in order to compare different dimensions of the buying experience such as customer service, style and fit of the suit, pricing, and so on. First up is Florence! Jordan and I explored the open air market on the look out for souvenirs and suits.<br />

Marco's caught my eye because of the colorful display of ties in the center of his stall. His selection of textiles was impressive: scarves, ties, mens and womens clothing, and many different leather products. He had stylish looking suit jackets and pants, but no dress shirts, which I found odd considering the t-shirts he was selling.<br />
<br />
When we said we were interested in buying a suit, Marco began to pull out jackets from underneath his stall  for our review. Marco asked us questions such as "What fabric do you like" or "Would you tell me how much you want to spend", which I found helpful. The problems began when we played ignorant of all things suit: fabric, color, style, etc. Marco became frustrated that we didn't know what we were looking for, muttering about "American tourists."<br />
<br />
Although frustrated, Marco still took the time to have Jordan try on the jackets, explaining about the different Italian fabrics he could choose from. Although this information was appreciated, Marco's fabrics didn't look anything like the product book he was showing us. In fact, the suits looked sun bleached. This is a consequence of selling textiles in the Italian sun, and when I asked Marco if a new suit could be delivered to us in the US, he stated that we could get the pants (which he didn't have to let us try on, so they would need to be custom made) but would have to buy the jacket at his stall.<br />

This didn't work for Jordan. He is a broad shouldered guy but fairly stocky, so none of Marco's jackets fit him properly. The largest jacket Marco had was: <br />

This is not a suit jacket, and having such a thin leather jacket would not work well for Jordan, who lives in Colorado. Marco insisted that this jacket would work well with brown suit pants and the orange tie (which I have to admit, is pretty stylish) but even this specimen didn't fit Jordan just right. We ended up purchasing a few of Marco's scarves in the end.</div>

This experience was an eye opening one. Firstly, although Marco had nice products, we found out later that not all of the items sold in the open air market were made in Italy. Most of the ties displayed in the market were made in China (which is why the ties in the picture are only three euro: real Italian ties are more expensive!). Secondly, although Marco had a lot of information and helpful tips, he was not as willing to be patient with customers who didn't know what they wanted. Thirdly, Marco expected us to buy the jacket from him even though he was selling sun bleached textiles. </div>

I would give Marco's stall  2 out of 5 stars. The experience was not as terrible as it could have been, and we did end up making nice purchases, but not did not find a suit that was up to either of our standards. Marco was a pleasant if impatient person, but did need to work on his customer service.</div>
